Independence on the Seas: Becky Smith

Becky Smith, a student studying BA (Hons) Tourism Management here at Southampton Solent, shares her excitement about studying the unit ‘tourism field studies’.

Throughout my childhood, I have been lucky enough to have traveled to many different destinations on cruise liners. This is where my passion for the tourism and cruise industry comes from.

One of the main reasons I decided to come to Southampton Solent University is the University’s close connections with the cruise industry. In particular the ‘tourism field studies’ unit on the tourism management degree caught my eye, particularly when I realised that we would get the chance to travel on a cruise ship for a few nights.

As I write this it is getting closer and closer to the date we’ll be embarking on our cruise, and I’m starting to get very excited! I’ve been fortunate enough to have been on cruises before, all of which were on P&O ships. P&O is the brand which we will be travelling with in May, so I wont be in totally unfamiliar territory!

However, I’m still a little nervous – this trip will be the first I’ve made without my family and boyfriend! I’m not too worried though – travelling with friends from my course will help me to get out of the cruising routine that I have grown used to and help me to find new ways to enjoy the experience. The activities, timetables and even meals might be different to what I would do on my own holidays, so I’m really excited to get stuck in and try something new.

I’m also working part-time job at Carnival UK while I study, giving me fantastic experience within the industry I love. It also makes travelling on a Carnival owned ship even more exciting.

I’m looking forward to graduating and using my degree to move into the industry full time – I’m sure the real life experience that I’ve gained throughout my time at university will make the transition easy.
