Centre staff deliver second education programme in Brazil

Following this summer's World Cup, football studies course leader Clwyd Jones has travelled back to Sao Paulo, Brazil, to deliver a second education programme for representatives from a range of Brazilian clubs and associations. Building on the first visit in January, the three day programme included sessions on coaching, analysis and scouting. The programme was once again organised by Unisport, a Brazilian based sports marketing company that has big ambitions to develop football education in the country. It is hoped that further courses and education programmes will be developed as the relationship between Solent University and Unisport continues to grow.

Premier League referee gives officials' perspective

Premier League and FIFA referee, Lee Probert, visited the University this week to talk about the realities of officiating in the world's most popular football league. Lee, who refereed the 2014 FA Cup final played between Hull City and Arsenal, also discussed the day-to-day demands placed upon referees at the highest levels. The session included a series of examples for students to test their officiating abilities. Using Premier League footage of contentious incidents and viewing them from multiple angles, Lee demonstrated just how difficult the role is. For the audience in attendance, this proved to be an illuminating experience as their perceptions of the incidents changed with each new angle available. In summing up the difficulties associated with making the right decisions during matches played often at very high speed, Lee closed by saying "welcome to my world".
