Judges named Solent the national winner in recognition of way it has helped develop so many young talents to pursue a career in the sport of basketball – whether that be playing, coaching or the opportunity to develop media skills. Solent were also praised for developing strong community links, making sure that young people can also benefit from their support.

Speaking about the awards, Stewart Kellett, Basketball England CEO, said, "Congratulations to our amazing 2022 award winners. Basketball is fighting back after a tough period during COVID and the without the network of clubs, volunteers, staff, officials, coaches and others who keep our game so vibrant and valuable for our communities, there would be no basketball. You are the lifeblood of the game and we thank you for everything you do."

The annual awards recognise the selfless dedication and efforts of various members and organisations/clubs across the basketball community. There are several awards available each year, covering all aspects of basketball from coaching, to officiating, volunteering and more. Three regional winners from each award were shortlisted for National awards.

Matt Bishop Head of Sports Programmes at Solent University says, “What a great way to finish 2022! I’ve been honoured to be part of a great programme over the past 20+ yrs – from its beginning as Southampton Institute Basketball to today’s successful BUCS Premier League programme (Mens and Ladies), with links to one of the UK’s top clubs, Team Solent Kestrels.

“I know first-hand the positive impact the programme has on the students at Solent, as well as the wider community, ‘on and off’ the court! This award is largely thanks to significant contributions from many people over the years, and I’d like to thank everyone who has played a part in the development of basketball at the University and the Solent area,” he continues.

The winners were announced at an online awards ceremony on Monday 19 December, hosted by Tahir Hajat. You can find out more about the awards and watch the online ceremony on the Basketball England website.
