Welcome

Team Solent Kestrels has a men's and women's squad. Both squads train at the Solent Sports Complex and carry on a long tradition of basketball at Solent University.

The team has a strong partnership with Itchen College in Southampton - an ASSE academy for girls' and boys' basketball. The college is regarded as a powerhouse of college basketball in the UK, recruiting talent from across the country to their basketball programme.

This is the perfect time to get involved with Team Solent Basketball. There has been a huge increase in participation over the past few years resulting in a third men's basketball team.

Developing talent

Team Solent Kestrels isn't just for senior players. Children as young as three can join through Mini Kestrels coaching sessions, run by Kestrels senior players and voluntary coaches.

The Kestrels also has boys' and girls' junior teams who compete in the Basketball England National Leagues at under-16 and under-18 levels.

Our History

Basketball at Solent University dates back many years.

Men's team

The men's team was formed in 2009 after the two local senior teams at the time dissolved. Team Solent Kestrels was created to fill the void left by the old clubs and to provide a competitive team for the talented basketball players at Solent University.

Since their first season in 2009, where they were narrowly beaten in the National League division 4 final, they have gone from strength to strength - most recently gaining first place in BUCS Premier South in 2018 and reaching the BUCS Super8s in 2018.

Women's team

The women's team was originally formed from a school team at Redbridge School, Southampton. The team progressed to play in the National League from the 1977/78 season until the 1984/85 season. The team reformed ten years later as the Solent Pacers, and eventually won promotion to Division 1.

Since reforming and becoming part of Team Solent, the women's team has continued to progress -  most recently they were National League Division 1 champions in 2017, and gained second place in the BUCS Western 1A league in 2017 and 2018.

Both teams have gone from strength to strength since their early successes, showing strong performances in the National League, the English Basketball League and BUCS inter-university competitions.
