Karl Sharman’s career has taken him from the South Coast of England to Leesburg, Virginia, where he now serves as President of Loudoun United FC.
His journey, which includes stops at Wimbledon, Chelsea, and Brighton & Hove Albion, reflects the best of what Southampton Solent University’s graduates can go on to achieve.
The foundation for Karl’s success began at Solent, where he completed a degree in Football Studies with Business. Beyond the academic learning, Karl says Solent played a pivotal role in shaping his professional path through hands‑on experience and relationship building:
“In this industry, your network is your net worth. It’s not just about who you know, but who knows what you’re capable of because they’ve seen you do it.”
Today, Karl oversees more than 50 full-time staff across Loudoun United’s structure, a number that grows to nearly 200 when volunteers and contractors are included. His team encompasses everyone from coaches and analysts to operations and catering staff, all working toward the dual goal of strong on‑pitch performance and long-term business sustainability.
Alongside the professional game, Karl plays a major role in supporting football at grassroots level. Youth participation in the U.S. continues to grow, and Loudoun United’s youth system now engages around 3,000 families. With global attention set to intensify as the world’s best players head to the United States for this summer’s World Cup, Karl sees enormous potential for the sport’s continued expansion.
Talking about his time at Solent, Karl said:
“Solent gave me my start, but more importantly it gave me the confidence and independence to build a career in football. The practical experience, the people I met, and the opportunities I was encouraged to take all helped shape the leader I am today. I’m determined to give current students the same support and the same chances to grow, because I know exactly how valuable that can be.”
Karl’s connection to Solent remains strong. He is now helping to open doors for the next generation of students, with several Solent students currently gaining invaluable experience as Opposition Analysts for Loudoun United. Their work includes studying the playing style, strengths and weaknesses of upcoming opponents and presenting insights directly to the coaching staff. It mirrors Karl’s own time as a student, when he gained practical experience as a scout for both Southampton FC and the Northern Ireland national team.
Football Studies Course Lead, Kevin Braybrook, said:
“Karl is an excellent example of where passion, resilience and applied learning can lead. His journey shows our students that football is a global industry with opportunities far beyond the UK. We’re proud to see Solent graduates like Karl thriving at the highest levels, and even prouder that he is now helping provide real-world experience for the next wave of talent coming through our course.”
Solent’s Football Studies degree continues to offer a strong blend of classroom learning and hands‑on experience. Sessions take place at the University’s multi‑million‑pound Test Park football centre, which features a full-sized all‑weather 3G pitch, an FA Step 5 football arena and modern teaching spaces. At the heart of the course is applied learning, with students encouraged to work directly with clubs and community organisations to gain the skills, insight and experience needed for careers in the global football industry.
