A final-year BSc (Hons) Sport Coaching student at Southampton Solent University has been awarded this year’s prestigious CIMSPA Graduation Prize, celebrating outstanding commitment to professional development and employability within the sport and physical activity sector.
Samatee Tocknell has been selected for the award in recognition of his exceptional dedication to coaching practice, his proactive approach to industry engagement, and his embodiment of the values shared by both Solent University and the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).
The CIMSPA Graduation Prize is awarded annually to a student who has completed a CIMSPA-endorsed course and demonstrated excellence across a range of professional criteria, including strong placement performance, additional coaching and volunteering activity, independent engagement with the industry, and a clear commitment to pursuing a career in the sector.
Samatee stood out among a strong field of nominees, not least for the significant number of coaching hours he has accrued throughout his degree.
His success is closely linked to Solent’s ongoing collaboration with Southampton FC. Samatee first engaged with the club through the Saints Foundation during a first-year module, where he completed a six-hour volunteering placement alongside his peers. Impressing supervisors with his professionalism and enthusiasm, he independently sought further opportunities and continued to build his experience with the Foundation over the following two years.
During this time, Samatee’s responsibilities increased, allowing him to develop both his technical coaching skills and his understanding of community sport delivery. His progression has positioned him strongly for a potential transition into paid employment with the Saints Foundation following graduation - a pathway that exemplifies the career-ready outcomes Solent aims to provide through its courses.
Recognising the value of his work with the football club, Samatee says:
“My experience with the Saints Foundation has been far more enriching than simply acquiring experience, it has centred around making a significant and meaningful impact within the community. For me, it has highlighted the challenges faced by young people today and strengthened my commitment to serve as a positive role model, utilising sports as a medium to help connect with and guide them.”
Adam Lewis, Course Leader for Sport Coaching at Solent University praised Samatee’s achievements. He says:
“Samatee is a superb example of what can be achieved when students fully embrace the opportunities available to them. From his initial placement with Saints Foundation, he has shown initiative, professionalism and a genuine commitment to developing himself as a coach. His journey reflects the very best of our practice-led approach and the strength of our partnerships, and he richly deserves this recognition.”
Recognising the strength of this year’s nominations, an honorary mention was given to fellow student Loz Titmuss for her contribution to the University community, including her leadership as captain of the University rugby team and her role as a course representative.
