CLEARING 2025 IS NOW OPEN

Recognition for coaching stars

11 July 2025

As Southampton Solent University’s class of 2025 graduates, the winner of the coveted CIMSPA (Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity) Prize for Sport Coaching has been revealed.

Four talented BA (Hons) Sports Coaching undergrads, who graduated on Friday 11 July, received special recognition during the ceremony for their commitment to the field. The CIMSPA Prize for Sport Coaching recognises an individual who has committed to their professional practice by completing a range of CIMSPA modules, taken part in real-world opportunities to enhance their skills, and made a significant contribution to the community during their study.

Andrea Dick, Ed Cameron, Martin Rogers Kafuuma Wasswa Kazibwe and Nathan Hamerton were each shortlisted for the award, with Andrea Dick revealed as the winner during the Department of Sport and Health’s graduation ceremony.

Andrea’s dedication to connecting with communities, as well as her commitment to her studies, saw her take home the win. From volunteering with Saints Foundation and supporting School Games by delivering sports activities in primary schools, to assisting with PE lessons, Andrea has accumulated more than 250 hours of volunteer work within community settings.

The connections cultivated by Andrea with teachers, school staff and coaches put her in good stead to step into a career in PE teaching. She is now going on to complete a PGCE in primary school teaching. She says:

“With continued support from all the staff at Solent, I have gained so much practical and hands-on experience, which has prepared me for the next step in my career. My aim is to combine the skills and knowledge I’ve gained from both my degree and teacher training to promote physical education and wellbeing in schools, while continuing to stay connected to the wider sport and coaching industry.”

Every shortlisted nominee has, on a large scale, contributed to communities in Southampton while studying for their degree. Nathan supported the delivery of more than 200 sessions with Learning Through Sport, while Martin undertook coaching at Planet Education. Ed spent time learning from coaches and players at the National Tennis Centre and gained experience with the Women’s Army football team. He says:

“This recognition means a lot as I work towards a career in elite sport. The course has opened doors and helped me develop the mindset, professionalism, and skills I’ll need to make a real impact in the industry.”

When it comes to what this prize means? Course Leader Sport Coaching, Adam Lewis says it best:

“Our practice-led ethos for the course means we expect and support all students to gain real-world experience, positively contributing to the community through sport coaching. Our four shortlisted students have all achieved so much, and we were delighted to have such a difficult time deciding on a winner!

“Andrea has found her calling coaching sport to children, representing the CIMSPA professional standards, and is a worthy winner. I am proud of her, and all the graduating students this year.”
