Solent University music courses are set to collaborate and stage their annual Anthems night, a celebration of the greatest songs of all time performed by students and staff.

The free event, which takes place on Monday 24 February, is open to the public and involves performances by students and staff from across the Popular Music Performance, Popular Music Production and Popular Music Performance and Production courses, with live sound technology and the Live Events Society running sound, staging and lights and supported by make-up and hair design, and the media courses.

The gig will feature over 20 selected bands and artists, each performing an ‘Anthemic’ song, ranging from Chaka Khan to Rage Against the Machine, and everything in between.

“The Anthems gig is a highlight of the academic calendar and showcases the wealth and diversity of talent we have amongst the music students at Solent,” explains Esther Keappock, Senior Lecturer in the School of Media Arts and Technology.

“We have had our busiest year to date with a fantastic array of success stories from current students and alumni and so the gig gives students, staff and alumni the opportunity to get together and share in a night of great music, whilst also being able to network and showcase talents to invited industry guests.”

This year, alumna Serrah Sillah – who performs as artist SVGA – and her seven piece live band, The Cubes, will be making a guest performance. Sarah, who graduated from Popular Music Performance (BA Hons) in 2017, received the Foreign Based Artist of the Year award at the Wa Sa Halet music awards in 2018.

The Cubes features current students and alumni from popular music degree courses at Solent, including members of acapella group, Restless Symphony, who gained success in 2015 as semi-finalists in the Gareth Malon Naked Choir BBC series.

Also performing will be The Henrys, a father and son duo who are both currently studying on the Popular Music Performance and Production degree course, and recently reached the finals of the Open Mic UK at the O2 in London.
