BA (Hons) Fashion Graphics student, Millie Arfman used her final major project to create a series of cards to help children in care communicate their feelings and emotions. We spoke to Millie to find out more.

Tell us a bit about your final project

For my final project, I created Chatter Cards, a card communication company that's all about helping others and easing the use of communication. With the use of colour, illustration and print design, Chatter Cards helps reinforce the power of speaking up about emotions.

What was the inspiration behind your project?

When researching into potential ideas for my project, I decided I wanted to create a brand that would help and benefit others. I based this idea around the struggle of communications and how technology and the influence of social media has affected individuals when speaking up about their emotions.

What have you enjoyed most about your time at Solent?

I enjoyed interning at Skinny Dip - an accessories company - as a stationery and accessories designer. This experience gave me an insight into what to expect when working in a design house within the fashion industry. Likewise, it also helped me find myself as a creative individual and made my decision on what type of career path I want for myself.

What's next for you?

I aim to continue the development of Chatter Cards by helping children and teenagers in care with the help from social services. I am also in the process of expanding my card collections to target issues such as mental health for both grown men and women, as this is such a massive issue that needs supporting.

What advice would you give to other students or potential students?

Always keep on top of your deadlines and have confidence in yourself. Make the most of the resources university provides you with. And believe in yourself and follow your dreams!
