Designs showcased at St. Mary's Stadium
Graduating fashion design students from Southampton Solent University showcased their final-year collections to industry, family, friends and fashionistas at the home of Southampton Football Club this week.
Organised by final-year students on the BA (Hons) Fashion Promotion and Communication degree course, Jessica Duke and Shannon Diment, the graduate show debuted 15 collections from BA (Hons) Fashion students on Tuesday 19 May 2015.
Both students were thrilled with the final result. “After months of event planning it’s great to see everything come together and successfully showcase the creativity Solent has to offer,” says Jessica.
Shannon added, “The collections were a great display of innovative design talent and the exhibition really captured the essence of what Solent continuously achieves – great fashion professionals,” says Shannon.
A combination of womenswear and menswear collections took to the catwalk. Animals, nature, and the elements took a central role at this year’s show – with themes ranging from protection against the elements and disease to the risks and issues around the sport of boxing and the music and lyrics of Kate Bush.
Hannah Lloyd’s collection focuses on safeguarding vulnerabilities and takes its influences from the animal kingdom, in particular the tortoise with the distinctive shape and colours that encase its soft body. While Yochelle Wilson’s vibrant use of colour and shapes is influenced by aspects of Central America.
To commemorate those left behind, the badge of the sailor runs through Pedro Jorge’s collection that explores the contrast between social classes, poverty and sophistication. While Lucy Treadwell’s collection is inspired by her personal fight living with type one diabetes. Outrageous, mutated and rare new diseases are shown through the silhouettes of Lucy’s collection.
This year’s Graduate Fashion Show celebrated the work of final-year students from across all the fashion courses – including fashion promotion, fashion PR, fashion photography, make-up and hair design and fashion styling – featuring exhibitions and examples of their work.
The fashion show was once again supported by industry and regional business with this year’s sponsors led by Hotel Chocolat and Bobbi Brown, who supplied the make-up.
BA (Hons) Fashion course leader Kathryn Sanders says, “For the second year running Solent has been voted one of the top creative universities in the country and last night’s event showed why. The students have worked extremely hard researching, designing and producing their unique collections of outfits and last night they demonstrated what creative fashion designers we produce.”
