Hampshire FA hires Solent alumna

We spoke to Southampton Solent University alumna Ellie Hellyer, who has gone far since she graduated in 2014 with a BA (Hons) Sports Studies degree.

Ellie really made the most of her time at university as she was in our Team Solent Women’s Football team, gained a number of coaching qualifications, and worked as a Sports Facilities Assistant at Sports Centre St Mary’s, where she progressed to becoming a Step Up Duty Manager before she left. She has always had a passion for sport, particularly women’s football and is now working as an Education Officer atHampshire FA.

Ellie talks to us about her time at university and how her career has flourished since she graduated.

The Faculty of Business, Sport And Enterprise has always supported me as a student and I am very supportive of the course structure that is offered with sports studies – this was the aspect I thoroughly enjoyed the most and which I believe supported me in securing my job here at Hampshire FA. I was able to tailor the majority of my sport studies units towards football and more specifically women’s football, as this was the industry I aspired to work in.

I believe that optional course units such as CV and Career Building helped prepare me as a student for not just the “working world” but assisted my thought process of ‘how’ and ‘what’ was required from myself to ensure I would stand out against other candidates at job interviews.

Throughout my time at Solent University I made a conscious effort to gain experience within the leisure industry alongside my studies. I knew by gaining this experience it would all accumulate towards enhancing my CV, this combined with the weighting of graduating with a 2.1 in sport studies from Solent.

A major factor in gaining my job here at Hampshire FA was my experience gained through working at Solent Sport during my three years at university. The staff are extremely supportive of students who aspire to work within the leisure industry and are continuously employing undergraduates and offering progression for them when they graduate too.

I have to praise the support I was given by all the staff at Sports Centre St Mary’s, especially, the duty managers. I was continuously offered progression throughout my role as a Sports Facilities Assistant which lead me to becoming a trained Step up Duty Manager and full time opportunities once graduated.

I now work as an Education Officer for Hampshire FA, my role consists of running coach education courses such as youth modules, emergency aid, safe guarding, referee courses and supporting the development and progression of coaches. Hampshire FA are a great organisation to work for and are able to support my development, aspirations of working in women and girls football by offering numerous opportunities with regards to my career progression and development. I’m extremely excited for what the future holds for my career here within Hampshire FA.
