Graduate contributing to rise of Southampton FC

University hosts WWI event

Southampton Football Club's official historians, David Bull and Duncan Holley visited the University this week to give a special guest lecture that sought to tell the stories of those Southampton FC footballers that served in the First World War. Based around a range of very rare images, the lecture, entitled 'Saints in WWI', was a fascinating insight into the lives and careers of those young men who fought for their country, with a specific focus on the 19 players that never returned home. The event drew a broad and varied audience from within and beyond the University. It also included a number of former Southampton FC players and LMCFR President, Lawrie McMenemy. Speaking after the event, LMCFR director, Dr Richard Elliott commented: "This lecture has been extremely interesting but also remarkably poignant. Whilst the young men brought so vividly to life through the images here today were obviously talented footballers, they were also incredibly brave soldiers, many of whom paid the ultimate price in defence of their country."

Graduate takes up new post at Charlton

Football Studies graduate, Jonny Dixon, has been promoted to Head of Academy Analysis at Charlton Athletic FC. Jonny will also take responsibility for analysing the Club's U-18 squad. Previously analyst to Charlton's U-16's, Jonny benefitted from an internship placement at Reading FC that was set up for him as part of his studies at Solent. He thinks that this placement, and the broader education he received on the Football Studies degree, prepared him for his new role. He commented: "The degree at Southampton Solent University helped me in so many different ways. It gave me the opportunity to gain experience working in a professional football club and educated me on every area I needed to be successful in the football industry. It was a fantastic place to live and learn and without it I would not be working for Charlton Athletic right now."

Graduate contributing to rise of Southampton FC

Football graduate, Ian Torrance, is playing a significant role in Southampton FC's emergence as one of the Premier League's best teams this season. As first team recruitment analyst, Ian is part of the team that is responsible for identifying potential targets for the club's Premier League squad, feeding information to scouts and coaches. Having walked straight into employment with the club after completing his degree, Ian commented on the importance of his studies at University: "During my tenure at Southampton Football Club I have had to show my presentation skills, my ability to research and apply wider reaching knowledge to football situations, all of these skills, I developed at Solent University".
