The class of 2021’s achievements will be recognised at the Southampton Guildhall next week (1-4 February 2022), during Solent University, Southampton’s much-anticipated graduation week.

Around 1800 students who finished their studies last summer will have the opportunity to don their academic caps and gowns and celebrate their accomplishments with family and friends during eight ceremonies over four days.

The ceremonies will celebrate the latest graduate talent from the 2021 academic year, with degrees and professional qualifications spanning Art Design and Fashion, Sport, Health and Social Sciences, Media Technology, Business and Law and Maritime, Science and Engineering subject areas.

Ahead of the ceremonies, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Karen Stanton, says: “I am absolutely delighted that we can finally host the class of 2021 and celebrate their success. It is important to celebrate this milestone in their lives, and we look forward to welcoming our students and their families to mark the occasion.

“The students have worked incredibly hard and shown great resilience in pursing their studies during the pandemic. A resilience that along with their academic studies will give them a great start in their future careers.”

The University will also be presenting honorary degrees to academics and professionals who have made an outstanding contribution in their fields of expertise.

This year’s recipients are:

Caryn Franklin MBE - Doctor of Arts

Recognised for her impact and influence in the fashion industry, internationally.

Alison Norrington - Doctor of Arts

Awarded for her 20-year career in the television and film entertainment industry.

Jackie Munro – Doctor of Human Sciences

Giving her recognition for over 40 years’ service within the NHS, spanning different practices.

Aaron Phipps MBE – Doctor of Sport

Recognising his success in and out of sporting events.

Robert Rinder MBE - Doctor of Law

Awarded for the impact he has in the law industry, particularly highlighting law to wide audiences.

Posthumous Honorary Doctorate for Mark Wing

Mark was a Senior Lecturer in law at Solent University who sadly passed away in 2020, inspiring generations.

The University’s graduation ceremonies can take place after vigilant organisation in line with government guidelines, and enhanced measures are in place to ensure they are Covid-safe. Masks are encouraged and a lateral flow test must be taken on the day of the ceremony. Graduates will be limited to a maximum of two guest tickets.

Graduates will be able to share their experience with any friends and relatives unable to attend the ceremony via a livestream on YouTube.
