Our Team Solent wheelchair rugby team are gearing up for their weekend match against Team GB Invictus

28th June 2017

Our Team Solent wheelchair rugby team are gearing up for their weekend match against Team GB Invictus – the squad that will represent the UK at the third Invictus Games in Canada later this year.

The Team Solent Sharks squad will include Paralympic stars, home grown talent and alumni from both of the city’s universities for the match on Saturday 1 July at St Mary’s Leisure Centre from 5-7pm.

The Invictus wheelchair rugby squad is part of a 90-strong UK team - made up of Wounded, Injured and Sick (WIS) Service personnel and veterans. The squad will join 16 other nations, competing in 12 sports at the third Invictus Games in Toronto this September.

Created by Prince Harry, the Invictus Games harness the power of sport to inspire recovery and generate wider understanding and respect for those who serve their country.

Speaking about the upcoming ‘friendly’, Solent Sharks player and spokesperson, Gus McKechnie says: “It is a massive honour to host these men and women. They have faced adversity serving our country and it’s a privilege to help them prepare for the Invictus Games in Canada this September.”

“It would be great to have as big a crowd as possible to support these military heroes at the match on Saturday”, he continued.

The Sharks, who are in top flight following improved performances this season, would also like to encourage more people to get involved with the club.

“We are always looking for more players and club volunteers”, says Gus. “We have a first and second team and also host a junior team, who finished second in the country at last year’s Nationals. Come down and find out how you can play, support and volunteer for the club.”

The match is free for all to attend. More information about the club is available on their Facebook page.
