Olabisi Dabi

MSc Applied AI and Data Science
Graduated 2023

Headshot of Olabisi Dabi, Solent graduate

Olabisi got a job at JP Morgan Chase and Co. as Senior Associate Payment Operations (Business Insight lead) after graduating. We caught up with her to find out about her experience studying MSc Applied AI and Data Science.

Why did you decide to do a postgraduate course?

At my previous employment, one of my job descriptions involved dealing with data (i.e. structured and unstructured data) in achieving different goals. I was also involved in the delivery of the automated processes. My previous job function was my motivation. I was interested in dealing with data analysis at a higher level and getting involved in writing codes that automate manual processes.

What was the best thing about your course lecturers?

The artificial intelligence world is multi-disciplinary. The lecturers were aware that most students were transitioning from other fields and were willing to guide them through to success.

How did your postgraduate course differ from your undergraduate studies?

My first degree was a BSc in accounting, it’s quite different from my MSc course. However, my MSc course is multi-disciplinary and can improve the accounting world.

What’s the most important thing you learned?

Progress is never linear, but achievable.

Have your studies helped you with your current role?

I was introduced to writing code using Python and other applications, this knowledge has helped me in my current role as one of my job functions involves creating a workflow with writing codes. I write codes daily and the background knowledge learned from Solent University has kept me in a good position.

My employer took an interest in me due to the knowledge I displayed during the interview. The displayed knowledge was learned during my MSc programme at the university, as I was taught different Machine Learning algorithms and their applications and how data (Big Data) can be analysed and prepared to meet a business need.

Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of studying a postgraduate course?

Be committed, disciplined, and work smart to achieve your goal. There may be some little challenges, but it’s worth it. Above all, take that step one at a time.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

We had a great module leader, he made the course look easier, was a good listener, and encouraged the students. I also want to thank all the lecturers within the department, who took out time to ensure that we came out great, your effort was worth it. Thank you all.
