Alison McFadyen MBA FRSA

Associate Lecturer

School of Business, Law and Communications

Alison is an associate lecturer in business enterprise at Solent University, having attained her MBA from Reading University. Her career began as a naval officer serving both home and abroad and has been strongly influenced by the training and development ethos of the forces. After leaving in 1989, she took a career break to bring up her young family. Returning to work, Alison realised that women who took a career break often lacked the confidence and skills to return to the workplace so she began a small business enterprise supporting women returning to work. That developed over a couple of years and she broadened the scope of her work to develop and deliver a range of training courses for organisations. Working with the organisation to identify their staff and organisational needs and delivering to these agreed schedules was an interesting and informative aspect of her business.

She has designed and delivered business model canvas workshops for pre-start, start-up and growing companies mentoring them via one to one meetings, general workshops and business planning. The aim of the workshops is to challenge assumptions, develop an inquisitive and creative approach to launching new products or services, and developing a sustainable model.

Some of the more recent start-up businesses Alison has worked with are operating under the social enterprise umbrella. This is a growth area in both Hampshire and the rest of the UK, and needs further support and development.
