Dr Barend Schutte, BA(Hons) MA PhD, is an associate lecturer within the centre for languages and international studies. He came to Southampton on a scholarship and was awarded his postgraduate certificate in research methods and his PhD by Southampton Solent University in 2006.Barend is married and has two children. He has been teaching at the centre since 2001, lecturing on a variety of subjects including German at all levels, business and academic skills, European studies, film and media studies, academic writing and english as a foreign language. After the completion of his postgraduate certificate in learning and teaching in higher education (PGCLT-HE) in 2006, Barend became a fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2008.
Barend's main research interests cover different issues connected to nationality, citizenship and identity within nations. He is continuing his research on German national identity as portrayed in German films – following on the work done for his PhD thesis. Barend is also concerned with socio-political criticism of Germany especially in the work of German playwright Rolf Hochhuth.
In addition, he has been researching the student experience of being taught English by a foreigner in UK higher education.
