Biography

Chris enjoys teaching and supporting undergraduate and postgraduate students with developing their research skills in higher education, as well as their ability to communicate effectively through written and spoken forms of assessment, eg, writing essays, reports, blog posts and presentations.

Through a variety of teaching and learning (degree, PGCE, and master's) in different subject areas eg sport, business and tourism/leisure, Chris has developed his skills and practical understanding of theoretical concepts and application of business case studies, to write assessments, deliver presentations and develop seminar learning materials.

Chris has actively utilised virtual learning environments eg, Solent Online Learning (Moodle), Blackboard (University of Southampton) and CANVAS (Winchester University), and studied their effects on undergraduate learning, which inspired him to carry out his PhD study.

  1. Industry experience

    Chris has previously worked in hospitality as an assistant hotel manager. He has also worked in field marketing as a sales representative for Group Pernod Ricard UK and Seagrams UK where he managed the southern England region promoting and selling wine and spirits.

    • 2008-present - Solent University. Associate Lecturer. Unit leader for Sports Tourism (Sports Events Management and Tourism Sport Planning), Sports Marketing (Branding, Celebratory Endorsement and Sponsorship, Globalisation etc.), Legal and Commercial aspects of Sport. Dissertation supervision and marking, subject areas sports marketing, major sporting events and economics, globalisation in retail.
    • 2016-present - University of Winchester. Associate lecturer. Delivering units in relationship marketing and business functions.
    • 2015-19 - University of Southampton. Academic skills tutor on the pre-sessional English course in higher education for post-degree international students.
    • 2001-2012 - Taunton's College, Southampton. Teacher and personal tutor. 11 years teaching 16-19-year-old students in subjects including travel and tourism, IT practitioners, leisure management, NCFE resort operations, public services, and business and IT.
    • 2003-04 - Highbury College, Portsmouth. Lecturer. Main subject areas were travel and tourism (marketing and event management), IT key skills, and leisure and tourism.

    Chris's research interests include:

    • Undergraduate student learning with educational technologies eg, virtual learning environments, e-learning activities and tools (eg discussion forums, blogs) 
    • Quantitative measurement of individuals and group behavioural actions and attitudes of learner towards learning resources and engagement in learning activities
    • Mixed methods research designs with data mining, online surveys and interviews

    Chris is currently completing a PhD in educational technology entitled: 'How are universities in Southampton (one post-92 and one pre-92) developing virtual learning environments for teaching and learning to meet undergraduate students' needs."
