Biography

Dr Jian Jiang (James) is a lecturer in acoustics at Solent University. He started his research interest in acoustic engineering from 2000, when he was studying at Tsinghua University in China. After obtaining a B.E. in fluid mechanics (at Tsinghua University) and a MSc in acoustics (at the Chinese Academy of Sciences), he moved to the UK for his PhD in 2005, studying acoustic condition monitoring at University of Manchester. He worked at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), University of Southampton, thereafter, as a research scientist, until 2014 just before he moved to Solent.

    By studying and working in acoustics and vibrations related fields for more than 10 years, Dr. Jiang has a broad research experience and a very strong track record within the subject of acoustic engineering, covering:

    • Underwater acoustics.
    • Bubble physics.
    • Duct acoustics.
    • Railway structure vibration.
    • Airborne acoustics and aircraft noise.
    • Acoustic condition monitoring.
    • Advanced signal processing.
    • Computational acoustics.

    He is a member of the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) in UK, a member of the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration (IIAV) and a part-time acoustician for Ocean Science Consulting Ltd. 
    Some of the major projects he has been involved in include:

    • Railway induced vibration and abatement solution’ project: EU FP7. 
    • Development of ultrasonic technology for decontamination, debridement and cleaning’: funded by Royal Society (Brian Mercer Award for Innovation). 
    • Bubble detection in liquid-filled pipeline’ project: sponsored by the CCLRC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK) and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL, USA). 
    • Offshore construction noise and its impacts on underwater environment’: Industry funded.
    • Clean Sky project: Development of NOISE MODULES for commercial aircraft navigation system, FLIGHT’: EU and industry funded. 
    • Acoustic condition monitoring under industrial environment’: sponsored by ORNS (UK) and in collaboration with Chinese Academy of Sciences. 
    • Richard Hammond’s Engineering Connections (BBC2 TV show).
