Biography

Joanne has been working in education since 1992 with a background that includes a mix of English as a foreign language, academic English, and business. Having lived and worked abroad, as well as designed pre-sessional language courses at Birmingham University for prospective international MBA students, Joanne is now course leader for three business top-up courses at Solent University.

    Joanne spent 17 years in Prague, Czech Republic where she ran her own language school, managing a team of 25 teachers offering German, English and Czech to a variety of schools, individuals and businesses. Alongside traditional language classes, specialist courses and workshops on presentation skills and professional communication were designed.

    Joanne is particularly interested in the global effect English is having upon other languages and cultures. She is also keen to develop presessional courses as well as utilise technology in the classroom where it can be an aid to the learning experience. 

    Joanne is currently engaged in a project to develop language distance learning courses through the use of the virtual world, Second Life, as well as developing her understanding of classroom technologies through study on the PGC Blended Learning Course. She has also been involved in an employer survey to develop links with local employers and inform the development of the BSc (Hons) Business Top-up programme. She has been developing online tools within her teaching to embed employability skills and CV development into her classes.
