After being awarded a Licentiate Degree in physics at Salamanca University in Spain, Juan moved to the UK in 1998 and completed an MSc in sound and vibration studies at Southampton University. He then went on to work as an acoustic consultant at Cole Jarman Associates in Surrey, primarily on environmental and architectural acoustics.
In 2000 he returned to Southampton University to take a position at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), where he joined the Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics group as a researcher in advanced measurement techniques. Juan carried out contract research sponsored by the European Research Frameworks 6 and 7 in collaboration with Airbus, DLR, NASA, QinetiQ, Rolls-Royce and other research partners.
In 2009, Juan joined Southampton Solent University where he is course leader for the Institute of Acoustics accredited professional courses (Diploma in acoustics and noise control, Certificate of Competence in environmental noise measurement and Certificate of Competence in building acoustics measurement), he is a member of Solent Acoustics and also teaches undergraduate courses from the entertainment technology programme.
Juan is a member of the entertainment technology team.
Research interests include environmental and entertainment noise, speech intelligibility and acoustics measurement techniques.
