Biography

Maria is a lecturer in accountancy and finance and a level leader for both BSc (Hons) Accountancy and Finance and the Business Foundation Year. She joined Solent University in 2016 and currently teaches on undergraduate accountancy and business courses where she leads several modules focused on accounting skills, professional development and employability skills.

In addition to a first-class honours degree in accountancy and finance, Maria has a PgCert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Certified Management and Business Educator.

Maria has a student-centred approach and is Teaching and Learning Champion for Business, Finance and Accountancy. She has a passion for enhancing the student experience and is keen to promote the use of inclusive learning strategies.

Community engagement is important to Maria and she continues to create assessment opportunities for students to engage with Age UK Southampton, including generating ideas to promote digital inclusion to combat social isolation and loneliness.

    Maria has over 30 years of experience across several industries including engineering, project management and accounting, enabling her to embed employability skills throughout the curriculum. Maria is a Fellow of the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers and ran her own successful practice for over a decade, working with a variety of clients including roles as European Accounts Manager for a video game publisher and is experienced on Sage and Quickbooks accounting softwares. Prior to accounting, Maria gained valuable commercial experience in a successful career as a Customer Project Manager with BT and was responsible for co-ordinating the implementation of regional, national and international telecommunications projects.

    Maria had the opportunity to develop her research skills through her PgCert in Learning and Teaching in HE, completing an action research project focused on tailoring instruction design materials to meet the needs of first-year students in order to make learning more efficient and promote academic self-efficacy.
