Biography

Dr Russell White leads the culture, media and performance programme group within the School of Media Arts and Technology. Russell studied for his bachelor’s degree and his PhD at King Alfred's College (now the University of Winchester). He also holds a master's degree from the Institute for the Study of the Americas, University of London, and another master’s degree from King’s College, University of London.

Russell joined Solent University in 2004 having variously taught American studies, media and film studies and contemporary cultural studies at King Alfred's College for a number of years.

Russell currently teaches on the media culture and production degree. Units taught include ‘Global Media Industries’, ‘Media Culture and Ideology’ and ‘Creative Industries: Policies, Ethics, Debates’.

Russell also supervises third year dissertations. Russell likes electronic music, crime fiction, travel, football and cricket.

    Russell is an Americanist at heart and writes about Latin American current affairs and culture. Russell is an editor with the London-based news organisation Latin America Bureau and a contributor to New Internationalist magazine.

    Russell is also interested in post-soul African American culture and has published articles on the globalization on hip-hop, Samuel L. Jackson, and rap star Eminem. He is also interested in Afro-modernism and has in that context written on Langston Hughes' trip to Haiti in 1931.

    Russell is preparing an article on the African American photographer James VanderZee and a special report on the Grand Nicaragua Canal. This builds on a five article series on the canal recently written for Latin America Bureau.
