Dr Catherine Phipps

Biography

Catherine is a senior lecturer in sport and physical education, specialising in the sociology of sport and research methods. She attained a first-class degree in Physical Education and Sports Coaching from York St John University in 2012, and in 2013 achieved a distinction in MSc Sociology of Sport and Exercise from the University of Chester. She was successful in being awarded a vice-chancellor’s scholarship for her PhD at the University of Greenwich which she completed in 2019, focussing on LGBT+ inclusion in the university sport context. Prior to starting her full-time position at Solent University in 2018, she was a senior lecturer in sport at Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln, and held positions at Syracuse University London, Foundation for International Education, and York St John University.

Research interests

Catherine’s research focuses broadly on gender, gender identity, and sexuality in sport. She is particularly interested in trans inclusion in sport spaces and has published several articles on this topic, specifically around the policies and practices related to inclusion. More recently, her research has focussed on gender-based harassment in online spaces towards women strength sport athletes. She has also worked with Dr Philippa Velija on research focusing on the inclusion of gender-based knowledge in university sport curricula, as well as on bystander interventions in sport and more broadly. She has presented at a range of national and international conference and was chair of the Leisure Studies Association Annual Conference in July 2021.

Catherine is module leader for level 4 Social and Cultural Issues and level 6 Contemporary Issues in Education. In addition, she leads a range of research methods modules, focusing predominantly on qualitative research, including level 6 Dissertation, Level 7 Research Methods in Sport and Level 7 Research Paper. She is the level leader for MA Physical Education and School Sport.
