Dr Catherine Phipps


Catherine is a senior lecturer in sport and physical education. She attained a first-class degree in Physical Education and Sports Coaching from York St John University in 2012, and in 2013 achieved a distinction in MSc Sociology of Sport and Exercise from the University of Chester.

She was successful in being awarded a Vice-Chancellor’s scholarship for her PhD at the University of Greenwich which she completed in 2019, focussing on LGBT+ inclusion in the university sport context. Prior to starting her full-time position at Solent University in 2018, she was a senior lecturer in sport at Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln, and held positions at Syracuse University London, Foundation for International Education, and York St John University.

Catherine has published extensively on transgender inclusion in sport, as well as gender relations and women’s sporting experiences. She has presented at over 20 national and international conferences and has been successful in winning funding bids to explore sexual harassment and violence against women and girls; the development of bystander training to tackle sexual harm; and the gendered experiences of women students on sport and physical education degree programmes.

She is a team member within the Critical Pedagogies in Sport network, chaired the Leisure Studies Annual Conference at Solent University in 2021, and was an invited speaker at a research seminar for the Centre for Child Protection and Safeguarding in Sport (Edge Hill University) in 2022.

Catherine has coaching experience in a number of sports, including Taekwondo, gymnastics and athletics. She holds a range of coaching qualifications.
