Matthew Fleet, Senior Lecturer

Biography

Matthew has previously worked as a head of physical education, head of year and curriculum/faculty director across a range of schools and colleges in the South of England. He is the principal moderator for physical education for a leading exam board and has worked as an external verifier, moderator and lead examiner. During the last decade, Matthew has worked in over 200 schools and colleges, leading to extensive expertise of physical education.

He has also worked as a teacher inset trainer/consultant for physical education, helping to support and develop both new and experienced teachers both in the UK, Middle East and Eastern Asia. In addition, he has worked as an educational liaison officer working with a range of learners with physical and learning difficulties. Matthew has played a significant personal role in setting up teaching and community outreach networks for schools in both Portsmouth and Havant.

Matthew is a senior lecturer in physical education and course leader for MA Physical Education and School Sport in the Faculty of Sport, Health and Social Sciences. He works across the BA (Hons) Physical Education degrees, MA Physical Education and School Sport, BA Sports Coaching and BA Sport Coaching and Development. Matthew is the unit leader for Pedagogy in Physical Education, Teaching Physical Education in Schools and Critical Pedagogies.

Matthew studied at Solent University as an undergraduate, obtaining an HND in Leisure Studies before completing a BA (Hons) in Sport Studies with Business in 2001. He then gained a PGCE at the University of Portsmouth in 2002 and gained full-qualified teacher status the following year whilst teaching at an inner-city comprehensive school. Whilst teaching full time in schools and colleges Matthew completed his MA in Education with a focus on inclusion, behaviour, SEN and leadership. He is currently undertaking a Doctorate in Education at the University of Winchester.

Additionally, Matthew is the chairperson for both regional governing board and academic advisor board of a large academy trust working across the South coast of England. He has also written several leading Physical Education books selling over 35,000 copies globally and contributed to numerous textbooks. He is also currently the Physical Education series author for Harper Collins.

Matthew can often be found away from work competing in marathons, ultra-marathons and long-distance triathlon. He enjoys spending a busy life with his wife, two daughters and son.

Further information

Matthew has over twenty years’ experience as a sports coach working from beginners up to elite professionals including seven years working for a Premier League Football Club. Players that he has coached have gone on to play in the premier league, champion’s league and the world cup. Matthew is a qualified coach in football, rugby, volleyball, cricket, badminton, athletics, hockey, basketball, and is a qualified swim teacher.
