Solent University is marking Black History Month throughout October by hosting virtual events, sharing stories and celebrating achievements from across Southampton.

9th October 2020

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Julie Hall says: “Community is at the heart of what we do and who we are at Solent and Black History Month is a fantastic way to showcase some of the history and achievements from across the City to our community, staff and students.”

“Like many city-wide events, in line with Covid-19 restrictions, this year’s Black History Month celebrations do look slightly different – however we have worked closely with organisations and partners from across the City, to continue this important event and raise awareness of some of the remarkable stories, from black history arts and culture across Southampton.”

Rising to the challenge of celebrating Black History Month during Covid-19 and the restrictions this has imposed on events, Solent University will be hosting the 'Diversity and the UK - just how diverse is our Business Community' event. This will explore the stories from black-owned businesses, provide top tips to those who might be thinking of starting a business or social enterprise and share information on support available.

In addition, the University will also be hosting a number of events for staff, students and alumni.

Black History Month is an annual celebration of the history, achievements and contributions of black people in the UK.
