Final year BA Graphic Design students recently travelled to Lahti, Finland for this year’s European Creative Futures (ECF) workshop. The week-long event brought together students and staff from across Europe, including Finland, Holland, Ireland, Norway, and the UK. The conference showcased a variety of entrepreneurial activities, including talks and competitions focused on start-ups, business plans, marketing and branding.

The 50 students were split into groups, working with others from different countries and disciplines. Groups contained a mix of musicians, graphic designers, business and social media students.

Student Rachael Horner, commented, “The other students were great to work with. My group quickly formed into a really helpful working unit, and I think they will become a useful network of friends across Europe after I complete my course at Solent.”

Student Lara Chapman was a member of the winning team and shared insight into her product, “Our idea was to develop a one piece baby garment that could monitor all of its vital functions, and then relay the information to a phone app in a useful and understandable way.”

Nick Long, Head of Visual Comms and Applied Arts, commented, “European Creative Futures has created a range of other excellent educational offshoots. In March, a group of marketing and visual communication lecturers, from one of ECF’s partner institutions, Cork Institute of Technology, came to Solent to deliver a series of workshops on sustainability, responsibility, and individual ethics.”

The School of Art, Design and Fashion is a founding member of ECF, which began in 2010. For more information on ECF, you can visit their website.
