Staff and students outperform at dragon boat race
Solent University rowers achieved a personal best at this year’s London Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival giving professional, club and even Team GB a run for their money.
The 14 man crew made up of staff and students finished in an impressive 12th place out of 34 crews and third in the ‘Charities Entries’ in the annual event organised by the London Chinatown Lions Club.
Solent University Sport Development Manager, Matthew Bishop said: “I am really proud of the team who have put in hours of hard work for this year’s race. It’s our best performance yet and we are really pleased to be able to support such a fantastic event which helps to raise thousands of pounds for charity which makes it all the more satisfying. We’re already looking forward to a better result next year.”
The crew were sponsored by Dr Lawrence Lee, a Southampton Solent University Independent Governor. He said: “It was a pleasure to be able to help them out and secure their entry for this year’s race.”
The event was held at the London Regatta Centre, Royal Docks on Sunday 29 June and included: martial arts displays, live music, traditional Chinese lion and dragon dancing and a food festival. The money raised goes to the nominated charities of The London Chinatown Lions Club.
