Peter Jarvis awarded Matt Bruce Memorial Award
Southampton Solent University lecturer and professional artist, Peter Jarvis, has won the coveted Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours ‘Matt Bruce Memorial Award’ 2014.
The Royal Institute, based in London, is one of the oldest societies of professional watercolour painters which promotes and encourages the use and development of painting in watercolours.
The award is presented to the artist judged to have made the most outstanding use of light and colour in a watercolour, abilities for which Matt Bruce himself was renowned.
Peter, a Senior Lecturer in Illustration and Design, works closely with students and helps nurture illustration talent. He has contributed to a number of exhibitions held at the University including A Point of View, featuring historic architecture and scenic studies from in and around the city of Southampton and most recently, Port Perspectives, a celebratory exhibition of scenes from the Port of Southampton to celebrate its 175thbirthday.
Peter’s work has been accepted for four consecutive years in the Royal Institute open exhibition and been acquired twice by collectors.
On receiving this award, Peter said: “In recent years my watercolour paintings have taken on a greater meaning for me and this award has fuelled my enthusiasm for creating more personal work.
“Having work approved by your peers is always gratifying and receiving this award through the judgement of the Royal Institute selectors is praise indeed. I am honoured to follow in the footsteps of highly regarded RI members who have also received this award.”
