BA (Hons) Interior Design alumna Rachel Adams was thrilled to recently be selected as one of three winners in the Society of British and International Design (SBID) ‘Get me 2 the top’ award with her final year project.

We caught up with Rachel who told us more about her success:

How did you come to be a winner in the SBID awards?

I presented my final year project design of a Badminton Complex at the end of year showcase in 2017 held at Solent University. It was here I was presented with my first SBID award for my project for health and wellbeing. My work was then selected by an SBID industry panel as one of the winning three pieces of student work in the UK for 2018. My work is now to be featured in the next issue of eSociety – the official interior design magazine of the SBID. I’ve also been presented with a complimentary SBID Associate Membership. I was overjoyed with the award and hope it will increase my confidence as I continue as an interior designer.

How do you feel your degree helped prepare you for your career?

My degree in interior design taught me so many important lessons and skills that I now use at work. My understanding of building regulations and adapting to the client's brief has been imperative within the industry. Also, within the final year you create a personal business identity producing creative CVs and business cards, getting you ready to find a job straight out of university.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

Currently, I'm working for a space planning company in Southampton as an assistant designer. My main roles and responsibilities are to produce drawings for clients, designing 2D and 3D concept proposals individual to each project. In a typical day I will review a number of new and ongoing projects, making amendments and creating new proposals for the client.

What advice would you give to others wanting to follow in your footsteps?

My advice would be to work as hard as you can and put all of your effort into what you enjoy doing. I would not be where I am today if I did not enjoy my work and that's the most important thing. If you are a creative person with a passionate drive for design then you’ll come out on top.
