Solent Business School open day

The University has several open days throughout the year so that prospective students can visit us, meet tutors and get a taste for what life at Southampton Solent University is all about.

James West from Croydon visited us recently and wanted to share his thoughts about his experience of the open day for BA (Hons) Marketing with Advertising Management.

I’ve recently been studying retail at A Level at a ‘business and enterprise specialist’ school. I have now developed an interest in marketing after attending talks with businesses like Thorpe Park and Coca-Cola.

I attended Southampton Solent’s open day recently. I was attracted to the University from recommendations from siblings who both had a successful time at the University.

My day began with a campus tour around the University’s facilities such as the Students’ Union which was filled with valuable information. I then attended the marketing course after eating at one of the Universities many food outlets. Following this I visited the Lucia Foster student’s residence which gave me a deeper insight into student life.

My marketing talk was delivered in one of the business classrooms and consisted of approximately twenty attendees. This differentiated from a lecture due to the location and made the course seem more diverse and unique from other courses. These courses ranged from marketing, marketing with advertising management and digital marketing.

The course that appealed to me the most was marketing and advertising management due to the additional advertising feature that you learn across the three years.

The talk was highly interesting and well-presented from one of the marketing lecturers: Ruth McLellan. She spoke of how the course featured presentations from entrepreneurs such as Theo Pathitis and Keith Weed.

The presentation also showed me statistics such as the employment percentage at the end of the course and work experience opportunities.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank Southampton Solent University and all the lecturers and ambassadors involved in making it a welcoming open day.
