Solent gains 'elite' endorsement

Sam Rylands MCIM Chartered Marketer, Marketing Coordinator for Solent’s sport courses, finds out why the endorsements for Solent’s BA (Hons) Sport Coaching and Development course are important.

Solent’s BA (Hons) Sport Coaching and Development was recently endorsed bySkillsActive and The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA). Sounds impressive, but I wanted to find out more about the endorsement and why it’s so important.

elite-end

First off I did a little research on SkillsActive and CIMSPA to understand who they are and what they do.

SkillsActive are the sector Skills Council for active leisure and they make sure that courses are of a really high quality and also meet the needs of employers.

CIMPSA are the professional body for the sport and physical activity sector in the UK and they ensure that young people are given the opportunity to develop their leadership careers.

Knowing this, I soon realised that the BA (Hons) Sport Coaching and Development must be pretty high calibre, so I went to talk to Kevin Harris, Course Leader, to find out more.

Kevin explained that the course underwent a gruelling evaluation process by SkillsActive and CIMSPA and it was an anxious time for the course team, but they concluded that the BA (Hons) Sport Coaching and Development ticked all their boxes; it was commended for its fantastic course content and how it prepares students for the world of work.

Kevin said, “We are immensely proud of our achievement as we’re only one of only six HEI’s in the country with this accreditation. This is great news for Solent University and demonstrates the course is very much in line with industry and employability agendas”.

I also discovered from Kevin that the course has fantastic units which offer students the opportunity to put together their own sport coaching sessions to really make a different in the local community.

The Coaching Innovation Programme has been running for three years and there’s an annual symposium, that Kevin wrote about a few weeks ago, which brings together and celebrates our students’ fantastic work. No wonder the course was endorsed!

Ben Gittus, Interim Endorsement Director at CIMSPA, confirmed my thoughts exactly when he told me:

“the course clearly meets the needs of industry and prepares students for employment in sport. The inclusion of work placements and liaison with local employers are particularly strong”.

Even from my brief exploration of Solent’s BA (Hons) Sport Coaching and Development, I found that it offers a whole host of amazing opportunities for aspiring young coaches to make a difference.

There’s a video I’d recommend you watch where you can find out all about the Coaching Innovation Programme and of course you can come to our open days to find out more about this fantastic course.
