15th March 2018

Last month we celebrated #Vote100 – the 100-year anniversary since the Representation of People Act 1918 was passed, allowing women to vote for the first time in the UK. Solent recently celebrated International Women’s Day 2018, promoting gender parity, and celebrating the achievements of women all over the world.

Across the University, we had a wide range of activities on campus to celebrate International Women’s Day, including a range of guest speakers.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Julie Hall, says “International Women’s Day provides a great opportunity for us to celebrate the achievements of our female staff, students and alumni. With a global reach, the day aligns closely with Solent’s mission and I’m delighted that we were able to be part of it.”

The day began with Solent staff members coming together for their chance to take their #PressForProgress selfies. This was their chance to demonstrate how they will be taking action to improve gender equality.

They were welcomed by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Julie Hall. Staff were also addressed by Cllr Satvir Kaur, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Leisure for the Labour party, and External Co-opted Governor at Southampton Solent University, and Julia Francis, Global Director of Learning and Leadership Development at ERM.

Staff and students were also given the opportunity to attend a one-day conference, in collaboration with Skills Farm, called 'Fearless females'. This was designed to inspire students in achieving their career potentials by discovering their own personal power.

Female leaders of the future also got involved. Twenty women from local businesses ran a speed networking session with 50 secondary school pupils who were visiting Solent for the day.
