Marketing and communications students met creative industries professionals in Bristol at the end of last month, as part of a showcase to demonstrate that you don’t have to be in London to get a job.
The South West Showcase was held at McCann Bristol Advertising Agency, with talks by professionals from organisations such as Bristol Media, Bray Leino and Indicia, as well as recruiters who advised students on how to get their first job within the industry.
Marvin Boot, studying MA Advertising and Multimedia Communications, says: “The event was highly interesting due to the eclectic selection of speakers from varied backgrounds and agencies.
“Every aspect of interest was covered, and the broad age spectrum of the speakers was helpful as we got insights from people who were veterans within their fields, but also people who had only recently scored their first agency jobs and could therefore reflect on what helped them in getting their position.”
The day included talks such as: ‘Do jobs outside of London exist?’ and ‘What are the creative industries looking for?’ Students also had the chance to hear the stories and tips from south west professionals, including creative directors, freelancers and marketing consultants.
BA (Hons) Marketing with Advertising student, Lucinda Scarlett McNally, adds: "It was reassuring seeing the stats on how many creative jobs there are, and how the industry is still growing.
"I liked the advice to research the company more by asking current employees on LinkedIn what it's like. I've done a lot of work experience and internships, but this is something I hadn't thought of."
The event was organised by Kathryn Ellis, associate lecturer in advertising and communications as well as an agency account planner. She says: “I'm always looking for ways to connect education and industry; in such a competitive environment, events like this one are vital in providing students with the information they need to launch their careers, but also reinforcing that there are opportunities outside of London.
“The day was a great success and it’s something the lecturing team is aiming to do every year.”
