Two of Southampton Solent University’s renowned shipping courses are set to be run in Greece, thanks to an exciting new partnership with AKMI Metropolitan College (AMC).

Southampton Solent’s BSc (Hons) Maritime Business and BSc (Hons) Shipping and Port Management will be delivered by AMC, at both Piraeus and Marousi campuses, from September 2016. Students will either join the courses at level 4 or direct entry onto level 6, having progressed from the Institute of Vocational Training Shipping Specialist programme delivered by AMC.

The courses were launched by AMC at “Posidonia 2016” in Athens, the biggest international shipping exhibition in Greece, hosting representatives from the global shipping industry. Delivered and assessed in English, the courses will follow the same format as those offered at Southampton Solent University, creating new opportunities for students and staff to complete study exchanges.

Nickie Butt, Programme Group Leader of Shipping and Maritime Business at Southampton Solent University, says: “As a major contributor to the Greek economy, shipping provides a popular career path for students but few opportunities exist to study the subject in Greece. This new partnership will offer students who are unable to travel abroad for their education the chance to enhance their shipping qualifications in their home country.”

The BSc Shipping and Port Management course equips students with modern shipping knowledge and port management expertise sought after by industry employers. It explores port and ship operations, ship finance, maritime law, chartering, general management and logistics.

For those studying BSc (Hons) Maritime Business, skills and knowledge are built around business and maritime studies designed for a career in international shipping.

Attendees at the launch included Professor John Chudley, Provost of Warsash Maritime Academy, Southampton Solent University (third from left), representatives from Metropolitan College, and others.

The new partnership will also offer staff from both institutions huge potential for collaborative research, as well as enabling Solent University to tap into AMC’s extensive links with the Greek shipping industry.

“We are delighted to be working with AMC, which has a great track record of successful partnerships with UK higher education institutions. Our collaboration will no doubt open up some exciting opportunities for staff and students in both Greece and the UK,” says Nickie.
