Amanda brings to the courses she teaches on over 30 years of experience from a career in the high street, trading from a variety of roles.

  1. Industry experience

    Amanda has over 30 years' experience working for high street brands as a fashion buyer. Follow the link below to find out more.

    After completing an HND in Business Studies with Marketing and Fashion in the early 1980s, Amanda enjoyed an extensive 30-year career as a fashion buyer. She first joined the Burton Group as a buyer’s assistant and through the group’s excellent training and development programmes, she quickly became a buyer and then senior buyer. After 10 years with the now Arcadia group, she moved on to spend time as a senior buyer at M&Co, Hamells (C&A), GUS – Mail Order, and a buying consultant for an embryonic internet business and Beales department store (branded merchandise). She has been responsible for turnover up to £80m per year and teams of up to 16, including quality control and supply management. Amanda was a member of the Arcadia group Heartland initiative.

    Amanda has successfully developed a number of assistants who have gone on to be senior buyers and helped merchandise team members to develop their careers.

    Amanda has successfully mentored many assistants to future success within the fashion industry to senior management roles. 

    Since joining academia in 2013, Amanda completed her PGCTHLE, an MA (distinction) and became a fellow of the HEA.  When Solent's Fashion Buying and Merchandising course was developed, Amanda become course leader and in July 2018 she added Fashion Management with Marketing course leadership to her responsibilities. 

  3. Research interests

    Amanda's research interests centre around teaching and learning within the fashion business sector. She has developed the University's retail store, Re:So - a fashion business studio space where practical fashion units are taught.

    Amanda has been the recipient of Solent's staff STAR award for student support.
