Role at Solent

As director of the School of Business, Law and Communications, Michael's primary role is to lead the strategic and academic development of the school in line with the University's strategic plan. He has responsibility to establish and maintain external links for professional development, as well as maintain a network of academic, professional and business relationships.

Michael is also responsible for leading the School's academic team to support and deliver the strategic plan, while ensuring effective collaboration with the University's academic structure.

In keeping with Solent's commitment to being a research-active university, Michael plays a key role in promoting research and innovation within the school to academics and students.


Michael has a successful record of effective leadership within both higher education and the commercial sector. This includes building Solent University's creatively vibrant and business-focused School of Business, Law and Communications in the heart of Southampton's business quarter.

Michael has a record leadership and development programme in HE during periods of transformation with Regents University London and Bournemouth University.

In the commercial sector, Michael has enjoyed senior accounts consultancy work with clients including Rank Xerox, Omega Watches, Del Monte and national account management posts with Fort Sterling, USA and Sketchley Vending, UK. His research, consultancy and business experience has also benefitted from working with many organisations, such as Virgin, IBM, St Luke's Advertising and numerous SMEs.

Michael has held external examiner posts at many universities, most recently Kingston University, Derby University and Buckingham University. He supported Buckingham University in overseeing quality in their partner colleges in Florence, New York, London, Rome, Milan, Madrid and Singapore. Michael has also contributed, as a higher education representative, to the House of Commons All-Party Parliamentary Group on management.

Accordingly, Michael's work for Solent University is informed by regular interactions with other HE institutions in the UK and abroad. He is actively engaged with professional accrediting institutes, CIPD and CME, which has informed new business-focused programmes in several universities where he has had direct input both as a manager or external examiner.

  • MA Managing Human Resources, Kingston University. Received distinction for research dissertation, and awarded the Cotzias Prize for Outstanding Performance and Contribution to the MA programme.
