You'll be introduced to the principles that underpin practice such as using evidence to inform the role, and develop communication, reflective and organisational skills which are required to work safely, effectively and collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team. It will also support your development of investigative techniques required for academic study.
Health Promotion in Practice: Supporting Equity for Children and Families
This module introduces key principles of health promotion with a focus on reducing inequalities that affect children and families. You'll explore how social, economic, and environmental factors shape health outcomes, and how practitioners can use evidence based approaches to support equitable access to health and wellbeing. Through case studies, reflective activities and applied practice, you'll develop your understanding of the challenges faced by diverse communities and the strategies used to empower children and families. You'll gain practical skills in assessing need, communicating effectively, and designing inclusive, strengths-based health promotion interventions that reflect current policy, ethical considerations and professional standards.
Play in Healthcare Practice
Play is crucial in health care settings to reduce fear, anxiety, and pain in infants, children and young people by normalising a stressful, unfamiliar environment. It serves as a vital therapeutic tool to aid coping, support emotional regulation, and maintain developmental progress during treatment. This module will provide you with a theoretical perspective on play and recreation in healthcare settings. You'll learn how therapeutic play can be used to help children understand their illness better and how you can prepare them for treatment. You'll also explore the right of the child to play for its own sake and how to provide a safe environment conducive to play. You will consider how different symptoms can impact on a child’s ability to engage in play and you will develop the ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate play plans to accommodate individual circumstances.
Health and Development Across Childhood and Adolescence
This module introduces core theories and concepts relating to child and adolescent development, exploring physical, cognitive, emotional, and social milestones from infancy through to young adulthood. You will examine typical and atypical development, including factors that influence developmental progress such as illness, disability, hospitalisation, and environmental stressors. You'll also cover key childhood illnesses, treatments, and clinical procedures commonly encountered in healthcare settings, building your understanding of how these experiences affect children and young people’s wellbeing, behaviour, and play needs. Throughout the module, you'll apply theory to practice using case studies, reflective activities, and evidence‑informed decision‑making.
Core modules
Emotional Wellbeing, Health and Resilience

By the end of the module, you'll be equipped with the knowledge and practical strategies required to contribute confidently to holistic care and to advocate for children’s emotional wellbeing within health and community settings.
Health Play in Practice: Work-Based Project
Your work-based project allows you to apply principles of health play within your professional setting, using experiential learning to deepen understanding of how play supports children’s health, wellbeing and development. Through workplace engagement, you will identify a relevant practice-based issue, design a small scale project, and critically reflect on its potential outcomes. You will produce a project pitch that evidences your intended analytical approach, professional judgement, and contribution to improved practice within your setting.
Development Through Play: Childhood and Beyond
In this module you'll explore the central role of play in human growth, from early childhood through adolescence and into adulthood. You'll examine how play supports cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development, drawing on key developmental theories and contemporary research. Becoming a Health Play Professional
This module introduces the core principles, professional values and evidence based practices that underpin the role of the health play specialist. Through a blend of theory, reflection and applied learning, you will develop an understanding of child development, the psychological impact of illness and hospitalisation, and the ways in which structured play supports wellbeing and recovery.
