Who's behind the Learning Skills team?
Welcome to learning skills! We are Carina Buckley and Helen Capstick, and over the next few months we’re going to introduce you to some of the things we do and the people we work with, and highlight useful resources or study ideas that you might want to take a look at.
We pride ourselves on being an active and integral part of the Solent community, and will be posting regularly to celebrate and promote student attainment.
But first, a little about us. Carina joined Solent as the learning skills tutor in September 2010, and since then has been variously described as the ‘Study Skills Guru’, the ‘Referencing Queen’ and, simply, ‘The Doctor’.
Having begun her career teaching human skeletal remains to eager archaeology students ‘up the road’, and she now teaches a wide array of learning skills to students all across Solent. Out of work she writes for fun, and is looking forward to being a regular contributor to this blog.
Helen joined Carina three years ago, in November 2011. She has prime responsibility for our popular skills website succeed@solent and oversaw its revamp two years ago, which won us a Hi5 award from Jisc.
Helen is always looking for new and interesting ways to support and engage students, and has recently joined her expertise and enthusiasm to the national group responsible for the HE teaching resource LearnHigher.
When she’s not working she might be playing tennis, organising the Library staff’s reading group, or chasing her young son. Blogging, in contrast, will be a pleasant rest!
