The pod: update

Parts of the pod arriving

Parts of our futuristic, multi-functional ‘pod’ have arrived from Netherlands and are starting to be secured in place in our new building.

The pod, which will be supported in the centre of the building, will feature a full-size lecture room and an open-topped viewing platform– perfect for an immersive teaching experience.

The first of eight sections arrived on Wednesday 1 July, and will be constructed on-site by mid-August.

Scott Brownrigg designed the pod to reflect the region’s nautical heritage, the University’s strong maritime links and our forward-thinking ethos.

Designed and manufactured in the Netherlands by CIG Architecture, it also has a strong international flavour.

CIG Architecture have a history in shipbuilding and a world-class reputation for supplying steel structures for complex architectural and artistic projects.

They are manufacturing all the individual panels for the pod – creating the futuristic shapes for them in the same way that they create curved panels for ships.
