Solent committed to social justice: paying living wage and above.
Southampton Solent University is firmly committed to social justice and to economic prosperity and in recognition of this, we are working with our main contractors to implement the payment of the living wage rate for their staff working in Solent University premises. All the University’s directly employed staff are already paid above the living wage rate, with some higher than national pay rates in place for apprenticeships and other trainee roles.
With increased funding from the University, the three main contract service partners will make the uplift in wages to their staff working across the Solent campuses. The living wage rate is being introduced in two stages, the first increase on 1 August 2015 and with full alignment in September 2016. The University will be working with the three companies concerned and anticipates that about 200 staff across all three companies will benefit as a direct result of the University’s decision.
Making the announcement today, Professor Graham Baldwin, Vice-Chancellor said: “We have a firm strategic priority and commitment to delivering an excellent people experience for those who work and study at Southampton Solent University. We value our contracted staff who make an enormous contribution to the University through a variety of roles. I am pleased that we are taking this step to finance a phased increase in wages through our main contractors so that their staff will receive a living wage rate in the future.”
