Terry Barber, M∙A∙C Cosmetics Director of Makeup Artistry, and Solent Honorary Doctor of Fashion, visited Solent recently to give BA (Hons) Makeup and Hair Design, BA (Hons) Fashion Styling and Creative Direction and BA (Hons) Beauty Promotion students a fascinating talk on the changing landscape of the beauty industry.

During his visit Terry was interviewed in front of the student audience by Lee Pycroft, associate lecturer at Solent and a leading make-up artist. The duo discussed everything from the ‘one size fits all’ Instagram look and how it is subduing individuality, and how perceived flaws are part of a more compelling story of makeup and identity.

Students were also given the opportunity to chat to Terry one-on-one at an afternoon tea held to celebrate the launch of ANONSTYLE magazine. The publication is an innovative online magazine featuring content from undergraduate and postgraduate students at Solent – giving them a platform to showcase their work.

We caught up with Terry and Lee to get an insider view of the makeup industry including the biggest challenges, advice they’d give to others – and what they love most about their jobs:
