Managing director of the Building Research Establishment’s BRE Academy, Pauline Traetto was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Education by Southampton Solent University on Thursday 13 July 2017.

Pauline is responsible for growing the BRE Academy training and education portfolio which aims to drive education excellence from boardroom through to the end of the supply chain, both in the UK and internationally.

On receiving her honorary degree, Pauline said: "I stand here today, immensely proud and humbled. What impresses me most about the University is that they challenge the status quo, looking at how they can make their programmes better and relevant to what industry needs. They are fundamentally key in bridging the gap between academia and industry.

"I get enthused every time I see or I witness a showcase of the students' work here at the University; it’s innovative, it’s professional and there is always such great energy and enthusiasm in everything that they do."

In line with BRE Group's strategy of supporting future generations and attracting new talent to the industry, the renowned centre recently entered into a partnership with Solent, enabling the University to offer BREEAM Accredited Professional (AP) training as part of its MSc built environment courses.

Prior to BRE, Pauline worked in the IT industry, developing international training at the start of the dot.com era.

She also worked in the automotive industry where she worked with BMW on education programmes on the MINI car programme.

Pauline is actively involved in STEM – engaging with local communities to unlock opportunities and to help support the industry, and to enable individuals and organisations to build a better world together.

Pauline finished her speech with some motivational top tips for graduates: "You have to be agile, there is nothing more important than relationships. We are all replaceable, stay ahead of the game. Always keep learning. Go forward, be an enabler, an educator and an enhancer in everything you do. Today brings you to the end of a remarkable journey, but embarking on a new one. Make yourself and our industry, the success it deserves to be."
