Metal Hammer’s editor-at-large Dom Lawson; DIVA and Sight & Sound writer Charlotte Richardson Andrews; and BBC Radio 4/World Service broadcaster and Guardian writer Anita Sethi will discuss the nature of self-employment in ‘A Freelancers’ Survival Guide: How to write for a living, from pitching in your PJs to wrestling rock star egos’ at this year’s WordUp! Conference.

This annual music journalism conference will be held on Monday 31 October at the Jane Austen Lecture Theatre in the Spark from 12-3pm. Students will have the chance to meet, interview and network with music media experts and get insights into a variety of careers.

Now in its fourth year, Word Up! 2016 brings another first-rate line-up of editors, writers and broadcasters from leading publications including Metal Hammer, Vice, DIVA, The Guardian, BBC Radio 4 and DJ magazine.

In addition to the panel discussion on surviving as freelancer, Zoë Howe - author of books on Florence & The Machine, Jesus & Mary Chain and Stevie Nicks – will reflect on her long and illustrious career.

Finally, Pulp Friction: Magazine publishing in the digital age, will examine the survival prospects for printed media, with panellists Carl Loben (Editor, DJ Magazine), Sam Wolfson (Executive Editor, Vice UK), Josh West (Features Editor, Games TM Magazine) and Robert Leedham (Editor, Stuff Magazine).

Fiona Sturges, journalist, Solent lecturer and the event’s co-organiser, says: “This year’s speakers are some of the most skilled music writers, editors and broadcasters working today. If anyone can advise our would-be journalists on how to get their careers off the ground, they can.”
