Chinese Summer School

This summer, the School of Business and Law welcomed 47 Chinese English language teachers from the province of Henan to enhance their professional skills at Southampton Solent University.

The four week programme, led by academic colleagues from the languages department, gave the Chinese teachers an insight into how UK teaching methodology works in practice; particularly the experience of student-centred and blended learning methodology.

The delegates also spent time in the classroom to work on their fluency and increase their confidence in spoken English, as well as reading and writing skills.  Other units enabled the delegates to learn about the culture and history of the UK, whilst experiencing it first-hand.

Educational visits were also part of the programme. These included a walking tour of London, a trip to see Stonehenge, a guided tour of the historic sites of the City of Winchester and a chance to visit a local secondary school to experience English language teaching themselves.

Jane Gamble, Senior Lecturer in Languages and Programme Leader for the course, said: “Their infectious enthusiasm for every aspect of their course made them a pleasure to deal with and they shared many of their own teaching ideas and techniques, making this a rich and positive exchange.

“A highly successful programme, for which many thanks to their tutors and to the Solent Enterprise centre!”

For the past five years, we have been working in partnership with China Henan International Education Exchanges and Services (IEES) to develop and deliver an International English Exchange Programme, which we hope to continue with in the future.
