Kick It Out: Tackling Racism in Football

Dr Richard Elliott, Director of Southampton Solent University’s football research centre was the guest of Lord Herman Ouseley, the Chairman of ‘Kick It Out’, at a private reception held in the Peers Dining Room of the House of Lords recently.  The reception was being held to mark the launch of the new ‘Kick It Out’ education programme – something that Dr Elliott is working on in conjunction with the organisation – charged with tackling discrimination in football.

Speaking about the event Dr Elliott said: “I’m privileged to have been invited to attend the reception at the House of Lords today and delighted to be working with ‘Kick It Out’.

“Their work is absolutely fundamental in changing attitudes at every level of the game.  I’m looking forward to developing education programmes with them that can result in significant change in the game.”

‘Kick It Out’ is a campaigning organisation which enables, facilitates and works with the football authorities, professional clubs, players, fans and communities to tackle all forms of discrimination. The campaign has been pivotal in persuading and supporting the game’s stakeholders to take their equality responsibilities seriously.

The objectives of the Kick It Out’ campaign are close to the mission and values of Southampton Solent University, which aims to foster a community with a culture of mutual trust, fairness, harmony and respect.

The University implements policies to promote fair treatment and equality of opportunity for all present and potential students and staff, regardless of age, disability, ethnic or national origin, family responsibility or social class, gender identity, membership of professional associations or trade unions, marital/civil partnership status, political or religious beliefs, race, sex and sexual orientation.
