Solent Sports volunteer in city

Southampton Solent University and the Saints Foundation have partnered up, bringing student volunteers to community-based sports projects around the city.

The agreement between the University’s Solent Sport arm and the Saints Foundation opens up a world of volunteering opportunities for Solent students, supporting and sustaining the many projects administered by the charity.

Southampton Solent’s Kevin Harris, Course Leader Sport Coaching and Development, said: “The Saints Foundation is a key player in sport development and coaching in the local area, so it is really exciting to have signed a formal agreement that will enable our students to take part in their projects, gaining crucial experience in real-world coaching and volunteering roles.”

Saints Foundation’s Mike Dixon, who graduated from Southampton Solent University in 2013, recently led an event at St Mary’s Stadium which resulted in many students volunteering to participate at the foundation, which has projects in six areas within the community.

“It is great to be working in partnership with Southampton Solent University and to be able to offer voluntary placements within our funded projects,” Mike said. “It is a fantastic opportunity for the students and will complement their studies, enabling them to gain practical experience within the sporting industry.”

Saints Foundation’s funded projects support adults and young people in the community, helping everyone from underachieving school pupils to vulnerable adults or those without education, training or employment to reach their full potential through sporting engagement. “Student volunteers will add real extra value to our sessions, supporting and guiding a variety of participants,” Mike Dixon added.
