On Tuesday 21 February, students studying BA (Hons) TV Production and BA (Hons) Post-Production for Film and TV had the chance to visit Sky Studios in London, thanks to an invitation from Stuart Lang, production coordinator for Sky Sports and a 2018 Solent TV production alumnus.

“After graduating from uni it can be tough to know what to do next,” Stuart said, “so I wanted the current TV production third-years to get a better idea of the opportunities in TV after uni.”

Third-year student Leila Bachrim said “We started off the day with an advice session with ex-students Stuart Lang, Georgia Constantinou, Dan Roberts, Alex Doyle and Joshua Masters, as well as other Sky staff including editors and senior producers. Hearing all these individuals’ stories and how they got to where they are now was really insightful, and filled us all with hope for the future. They also gave us some top tips on how Sky runs as a company, and what they look for in future employees – which was of course extremely helpful.”

“The next part of our day was a tour of the studios, edit suits and a chance to fiddle with some cameras, lighting and other pieces of top industry kit," Leila said. "The staff all around the building were super friendly and really keen to give us any advice and information. We all felt really welcome and gained a lot of knowledge from chatting to the other staff members.”

Opportunities like these are excellent for our students to be able to broaden their understanding of how the industry works, and gain a greater understanding what opportunities there are for them after University. Kate O'Driscoll, Senior Lecturer TV Production at Solent Uni, said “We have an impressive network of graduates already out working across all areas of television, and for them to want to stay in touch and offer these networking opportunities to our current students is a credit to them and to the course."

“It was great to see new and exciting talent,” Stuart said, “and hear that students enjoyed the day and it helped them in some way.”

Leila, our third-year student, certainly seemed to find the trip useful. “The day reassured a lot of us that graduating from university might not be so daunting. I learned that it's okay to not feel like you know everything, as a lot of it is taught on the job. All you need is confidence and a positive, friendly working attitude. The day was a great experience and one that I won’t be forgetting anytime soon!"
