7th August 2019

If you haven’t met the conditions of your offers, changed your mind since making your initial choice or decided late that you want to go to university - Solent University’s trained advisors will be on hand to offer advice, support and campus visits when A level and BTEC results are unveiled on Thursday 15 August.

Staff and students will be on Twitter, Facebook, email, live web chat, Instagram, Whatsapp and at the end of a phone to advise and support on the various options available.

Rachel McCulloch, Solent’s UK student recruitment and conversion coordinator, went through Clearing herself after deciding that the navy course she had signed up for wasn’t for her.

Here she explains why it’s so important to make sure you choose the right university: “Applicants are more than welcome to pick a course that on paper seems to fit the bill. However, the university experience is often more than just the course and this is very difficult to put across effectively on the UCAS website or in a prospectus.

“Try and speak to a current student and visit or research the town or city,” she continues. “I knew higher education and Solent was for me when I stepped into the building on the open day and spoke to the course leaders.

“It just felt right.”

Rachel McCulloch ready to take calls through Clearing

Before making a final decision, prospective students will be able to taste life at Solent with a Clearing open evening on Friday 16 August from 4 until 7pm, and an open day on Saturday 17 August from 10am until 2pm, where visitors can look around the campus, talk to current students, plan accommodation, check out facilities and take a look at what the city has to offer.

Rachel shares her top tip for Clearing: “Get familiar with what you need to do before Clearing officially opens, so that on results day you can concentrate on that rather than panicking because you don’t know how to find anything or complete the tasks you need to. UCAS will also give you the updates you need to complete so regularly check in to your profile to check you are up to date.”

The Clearing hotline is open from 7.30am to 7.30pm on Thursday 15 August, 7.30am-6.30pm on Friday 16 August; and 9am to 5pm on Saturday 17 August. It is closed on Sunday 18 August but will then reopen from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Thursday and 9am to 4.30pm on Fridays throughout the summer.
