Virtual exhibition of Makeup and Hair Design student work
‘Other Selfies’ is a virtual exhibition celebrating the work created by 1st year students.
Launching Thursday 4 March at 4pm at www.gunkcollective.com , ‘Other Selfies’ is a virtual exhibition celebrating the work created by 1st year BA (Hons) Make-up and Hair Design students. The exhibition will be opened by acclaimed international artist Harrold Offeh and Professor Peter Lloyd, Dean of the Faculty for the Creative Arts, Architecture and Engineering.
The self-portrait or ‘selfie’ has become a way of creating an identity, a method of making-up, sharing and publishing our self or ‘selves.’ But who are these portraits for, what do they communicate and say about the self and identity more generally?
Drawing on original portraits by artists as diverse as Artemisia Gentiles, Adrian Piper, Robert Mapplethorpe and Linder Sterling, the works in this exhibition explore and intervene in the history of portraiture, identifying and addressing exclusions by interrogating visibility and the very notion of an authentic self.
Dr Sebastiane Hegarty, Senior Lecturer, describes the the curation of work; “All the portraits in this exhibition are not content to depict and represent what we know, rather they are inclined toward the unknown, the experimental. They provoke and question identity, creatively interrogating not only the self but how we make-up our other selfies.”
‘Other Selfies’, is open to all to attend online, hosted by GUNK Collective, which is an online multi-media platform, showcasing the cutting edge vision of Solent University undergraduates in BA (Hons) Make-up and Hair Design, as well as BA (Hons) Prosthetics and Special Effects Design. GUNK Collective in its entirety has been established by Solent undergraduates who are honored to present this exhibition and would like thank their esteemed guests, Harold Offeh and Professor Peter Lloyd, for joining them at the virtual opening of event to showcase the high caliber of work produced by 1st year students.
